HELP! My sign won't connect to my new wireless router!
If your company's router/wifi settings ever change, your sign will no longer be able to connect to our server to download its content and display settings. Your sign will show as "offline" on the RUNSAM status page.
Here are a few ways to bring it back online:
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
You should know some basic information about your wireless setup in order to configure the sign's connection properly, including:
- Access point name. What is the name of your company's wifi connection?
- Wifi password, if any.
- Encryption, if any. If you have a windows laptop available, you can view the encryption type by clicking the wireless connection icon in the system tray (small icons at the lower right edge of the screen), and hovering over the desired connection. In Windows Vista/7, you'll see Security Type: WPA, WPA2, WEP, or Unsecured.
Method 1: Connect an ethernet cable directly to the device
- Follow the steps contained in the procedure How to add or modify a wireless router on your RUNSAM account
- Connect an ethernet cable directly to the device.
- Wait up to 5 minutes to verify that sign's status on the RUNSAM status page shows as "Online"
- Disconnect the cable and power the device off then back on. Your sign should now be connected on the new wireless configuration.
Method 2: Configure the sign with a spare USB thumbdrive
- Follow the steps contained in the procedure How to add or modify a wireless router on your RUNSAM account
- Insert a formatted, empty USB thumbdrive into a free USB slot on your computer.
- On the HARDWARE page, and on the line containing the sign to be updated, click the "Disk" icon at the extreme right. You might be asked if you would like to download "sign_operating_system.zip", or it may download automatically depending on your browser settings.
- If prompted, save it to the blank USB key you inserted. Otherwise, find the file in your downloads and copy it to the USB thumbdrive.
- Safely remove/eject the USB thumbdrive.
- Plug the USB thumbdrive into the running sign.
- Wait up to 5 minutes to verify that sign's status on the RUNSAM status page shows as "Online"
- You can now remove your spare thumbdrive from the sign. DO NOT REMOVE existing USB sticks, if your sign came so equipped.
Method 3: Power off the sign and manually update the sign configuration
IMPORTANT: Before you begin, identify the media format your sign is running from: USB or CF card. If the sign is running on a CF card, you will need to have a CF card reader available. These can be purchased at any reasonably-stocked computer store.
- Power off the sign and remove the USB thumbdrive / CF Card from slot on the sign. You'll need to copy some files onto it in a later step.
- Follow the steps contained in the procedure How to add or modify a wireless router on your RUNSAM account
- On the HARDWARE page, and on the line containing the sign to be updated, click the "Disk" icon at the extreme right. You might be asked if you would like to download "sign_operating_system.zip", or it may download automatically depending on your browser settings.
- Insert your USB key, open the drive to view files, if it doesn't automatically. Go to "Start/My computer" or "Start/Computer" in Windows. On a mac, the drive should appear on your desktop, and in the finder.
- Open the downloaded "sign_operating_system.zip" file by double clicking on it.
- Drag the "ENS" folder to the root of the USB drive. Allow it to merge/overwrite all existing files.
- Safely eject the USB drive and reinsert it into the sign.
- Power on the sign.
- Wait up to 15 minutes to verify that sign's status on the RUNSAM status page shows as "Online".
