Changing static IP from remote

Published on March 2, 2012 by in Uncategorized

Our digital sign computers require internet to run. To access the internet, the computers are of course connected to a network.

Some networks require what is called a “static IP” – what that really means is that the network address for the computer is very specific. There are 5 parts that are required to define a static IP:

1: IP Address: 192.168.0.100 (as an example)
2: Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (again, example)
3: Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (yup – example)
4: NS1: 8.8.8.8 (example)
5: NS2: 4.4.4.4 (exampe)

Ok – so what are these numbers?

- The IP address is the specific address of the computer itself on the network.
-The Subnet is the range of networks that can “talk” to each other. Don’t fret too much about this number – other than to know it is the “range” of the network and usually starts with a 255.255.number.number. – usually 255.255.255.0 for most networks.
-The “Gateway” is the address of the device that the computer needs to talk to on the network in order to get access to the internet. Usually the “gateway” is your router address.
-The NS1, NS2 are the computers that tell your computer where to find other computers via the internet. Sometimes your router will also be your nameserver, sometimes your nameservers are provided by your internet provider. Often companies use Google’s nameservers (8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4). Bottom line is is depends on how your network administrator has set up your network.

Ok – so now lets walk through how you can work with your network administrator to get your digital sign computer to attach to your network:

1: Log into runsam.com
2: Click on “hardware”
3: Click on the configure button for the device you wish to update. The configure button is 2nd from the right – just to the left of the “save” button.
4: In the popup screen, turn off dhcp – put in the IP, subnet, gateway, NS1, NS2 provided from your network administrator, and hit submit.
5:  Now click on the “save” icon. You will have a file called “sign_operating_system.zip” download onto your computer.
***The rest of the steps are below the gallery…. Please review.

Ok – so now you have a configuration file on your computer. The next steps are very simple – but very important to follow properly:

1: Save the sign_operating_sytem.zip file EXACTLY as it is onto a usb key.
(do NOT unzip it, do not rename it).
2: unplug the USB from your computer.
3: plug the USB key into the sign computer.
(The computer must be booted – i.e. it MUST be on)
4: Wait around 20 seconds – a green screen that says “safe to remove usb key” will pop up on the screen.
5: Remove the USB key.
6: Reboot.
7. You now want to see if the sign computer successfully connects to the runsam.com server with the new static IP details. Refer to the “status” page – per the last screenshot above.
